Water's Edge Great Escape
Hot tub - first fill
Nightmare repair

10-12-2020

FYI:  I am having a $100 or so increase in my electric bill, in the 20 - 40 degree NJ winter.  Way more that I thought.  Looking to insulate this hot tub with something.  The spray foam is not working to my satifaction.

Purchase this at a local pool store, on sale, end of year model.  Got it delivered and the old Jacuzzi removed.  There it sat, and sat and sat.  So after a long time I finally got time to get it going.  Big number one that is not listed on any website.  The whole side of the hot tub comes off to get to the power cable (mine is 120v, and is by the top control panel ), so 10 screws have to be removed.  I would leave the two top center screws as last.
That PEG in the center bottom, that is to hold the side when dropping the side off or installing it back on.  You need a lifting board under the edge of the cover to help lift it as the top of the panel slides under the fiberglass edge.  It's not awful heavy, but there is not much to grab onto.
HINT:  MARK with a permanent pen or scratches where the side and edges match.  That way you can find the correct side screw holes when you have to take the side off.
The motor marking by the mauf. says 1 hp.. Water's Edge say my mode has two... maybe they upgraded ? ?   This 1 HP REALLY pumps water.  On low it's pumping a lot, on high it really moved the water.

(Info:  If you have this type of tub.  I would get some grease, unscrew the front of the pump screws one screw at a time and grease them and put them back.  It's metal they are screwed into, so if they rust after 5+ years you'll never get them out.)

(update Sat. Oct 17th. '20)   I have to remove the pump, to do that I have to take off the other side cover to get to the two back screws holding the motor.  Looking for number the Waters's Edge person said should be there to identify what pump is there.  There are no "numbers" on the body of the front pump cover to find replacement parts.  And there are no "parts listing" as it seems whatever parts are available at that time are installed.   After removing the motor, I find the source of my leak.  I can now see straight into the pump front connection.  There is a crack where the threads meet the body.  This is thick plastic, how did that crack ?

So now searching for a front pump part now that I have some "numbers" from inside the pump.  It seems they make many, many variations of this style pump.  A YouTube video (see link below) of a Hot Tube company finally identifies the pump.  A Chinese Guangdong LX knockoff that looks like a standard "Waterway" brand, that is used in many quality Hot Tubs.  You can tell by the large screws that look like they have washers on front of the wet ends.  The Waterway have regular size screws.

Update:  Oct. 24th.  I received the wet end (whole thing - $86, with seal and impeller) on Friday night 7PM.  So I popped off the cover I needed from the replacement (no place had just the front).  No lube was on the rubber gasket, so I stole some from the old one.  I also lubed the screws with oil and it slipped right on.  This has the 3 plugs in front so I took off the old barb for the cracked front.. .NOPE.  The replacement has "fine thread" for the barb, of course on the old one "regular thread". So remember that if you need to order this part.

So I doubled over the pipe from a jet that goes to that barb and vice gripped it.  I put on a gasket (2" inside) I bought off Amazon as that fit better then another 2 silicon type I bought from the Hot Tub place.  Put it all together and plug it in... nothing.  Hit the reset.. nothing. I hit the "on" button on the control (top left) and it starts !
Let it run... no leaks, also checked that plastic jet tube that is to go to the barb I need to replace, no leaks.  I let it go to "heat mode - ECO" flashing... it went two degrees in about 2 hours.

TWO STUPID FEATURES on this model:
1. You can hit a button and turn this thing off ? ? ? ?  Not a good feature.  Will test that later.
2. ECO mode.  When you start it goes to ECO mode.  This will drop your set temp by 20 degrees.  So at 101 degree set, it will go to 81... forever !  Figuring it take an hour for each degree.  That's 20 hours to bring it up to temp !
So the next morning I go outside, and it's 81 degrees, pump in slow.  I read the control panel directions and programming.  There is a clock on the panel.

ONE:  I turn off ECO.  Nice feature, but 20 degree drop.  Maybe if you are going away for a week or more.  No way to set the ECO to only drop 5 or 10 degrees.  You can set when ECO goes on and for how many hours in that mode.  Nice, but 20 degrees !
So right now it's running, up to 87 degrees (I turned off ECO 6 hours ago).  The area by the motor is now dry.  Spent 15 min getting the side panel to match the edge screws.   I'm going to mark those panels.  REMINDER:  if you take off two of the same sides, the edge panel drops off.

Update Nov. 8th:  I finally got time to add the barb that was "fine thread" I ordered for $8.  A 10 min replacement to the plug that was there.  Turn on the pump, no leaks.  Still not sure how all these jets work, but no leaks.  I did mark the side panels with a black felt tip.  After some 20 min of watching for leaks, it was easy to put back the side correctly.  I did notice that at the bottom, there is a good gap at the bottom of the side panels for cold air to enter.  Something to think about.

The hot tub company says they have insulation surrounding the tub.  It's thin reflective foil stuff.   Looking to get some thin, real insulation that I saw surrounding a hot tub at the store I bought this from.

I cleaned it and filled it with water.  I then find out the power plug is in the wrong place (it's on the left side facing the controller panel) so I have to use an extension cord for now.   So after filling it, I plug it in and it starts..... great... wait.  What's this water.  The big white connector in the front of the pump is leaking.  After trying a few things I remove the connector.

Factory defect: The glue used to connect the flexible hose to the shutoff-connector was laid on to much and it leaked to the rubber seal.  That glue did not let the connector go flat to the pump hosing.  Hoping to just cut off that hard glue, I would fix the leak.  I removed the glue, but the glue deformed the rubber seal.   I tried flipping the seal, nope.

I did contact the Water's Edge company by E-mail stating this is a first fill and only reporting there is a leak by the pump.  They returned a message in 15 min, but they most likely closed on this Sat. night before he received my reply about finding the glue problem.
Sooooo it's 5:30 now on a Saturday, the pool place is closed.

Sunday AM:  Just retuned from the pool place, they don't sell the Water's Edge hot tubs anymore.  Showed them the damaged washer, was given one that was thinner (2 1/2 and 1/8") and of course it did not fix the leak.  So waiting for the company to get a correct size one.

I check on line:  Any wording of Hot Tub in the search line gives you places that do not deal with this company.   I did find a seal-gasket.  Rather then just that black seal, there is a type that is attached to a gasket too.  Yet the descriptions are not easy to understand.   A number of "replies" state to call them as the sizing the ordered were wrong.

I ordered a 2" gasket, I finally saw on Amazon someone show this net type of gasket and a ruler.  The 2" refers to the "inside" diameter.  The ruler in a couple of photos on Amazon shows the gasket that goes into the notch at 2 1/2" and 2 3/4" as the end of the flat seal.   Of course it's going to take 5 days unless I pay some $24 to get it here in 2 days.
I'll wait. (Amazon seals came a day before the SPA company... but the SPA company soft seals had defects.  The edges were not flat, not sure if they would seal if I used them.

I heard back from Water's Edge.  They don't have any "parts listing" per say, but if I pull off the side and give them the 7 digit number on the pump front, they would be able to help me.  Nothing about this mistake being their fault as I sent them a photo of the bad seal. (week later update:  Somehow the area of the threads were cracked, that's where the leak was coming from)

Water's Edge Escape hot tub disaster This is what happens to a gasket smashed by extra glue.

So I finally receive the replacement seal/gasket.  Get it in place and screw it on.  Still leaks.  I finally realize where the water is coming from.  The front of the pump is cracked, circular around the pump thread.... terrific.   So I now need a new front wet end.  Brand new, never used and I have cracks in main parts.  It seems that part, if they use standard parts, should be under $100... on a new hot tub of high quality.
I try to find any numbers on the pump or motor.  Nope.  So Saturday I need to pull out the motor and start finding some codes.

Other problems.  There are two screws on the inside of that flat plate, need to remove the other side panel.  Plus the screw are in sideways as you can't get straight up/down.  I then get the motor out.  There are 4 rubber washers that are suppose to go under those screw washers so it has some vibration reduction.

This pump is a Chinese knockoff (note the wide washers) 1 x 1HP 48FR WUA 100 Spa Hot Tub Pump Wet End
Guangdong LX Pumps 2" X 2" (Note: hot tub companies use whatever diameters and power ratings they wish.)  The 2" really is 2.5 size inside tube with a 3" screw cap.  And the 2" replacement washers with edges don't quite fit right.
