AP |
Aperture Priority - The ability for the user to choose an aperture on
your camera then shutter speeds will automatically change by the program in the
camera to provide a correct exposure. This is commonly know as "Auto" on many
cameras. |
SP |
Shutter Priority - you choose a shutter speed and the camera's
electronic program will choose the correct aperture. The aperture will still be
wide open. Needed when you want a specific high or slow shutter speed. If the
shutter speed is in the viewfinder there may be warning of over or under
exposure and sometimes shutters slower than 1/30 a second. |
MM |
Metered Manual - Sometimes known as "Needle Match" This allows you
the ability to have the camera's light meter tell you when a shutter and
aperture setting are correct for that light reading. Many "basic" camera
courses require you to do this. This teaches you the logic of a meter reading
and the different shutter/aperture choices you can have for that same
photograph. Depending on the camera, how you do this, is a needle in the
viewfinder needs to overlap another needle. Some have matching lights in the
viewfinder. Have both lights (one usually flashing one solid) overlap for a
correct exposure. |
P |
Program - This camera has some sort of electrionic "brain" that can
choose the shutter speed and apeature for a correct exposure. Some cameras have
two programs, some three. The common ones are "P":
This chooses an average between the shutter speed and aperture. "Pc"
- This program chooses a smaller aperture for larger depth of field for more "Creative"
shots but slower shutter speeds (to make up for the less light). "Pa":
This chooses a faster shutter speed for "Action" at a wider aperture.
Remember, with 400ASA or higher film in bright situations there may be very
little difference with Pa and Pc programs due to the high shutter and small
aperture needed to correctly expose the film. So unless you have 1/2000 or
1/4000 of a second these last two mode may only change aperture or shutter speed
slightly. |
EC |
Exposure Compensation - This is just fooling the light meter to think
your film is slower or faster for a few shots. This allows you to get better
exposed pictures if you are in very bright sun (beach or snow covered ground) or
dim area (heavy shade or flat lit subjects). Actually all cameras can do this.
If you have ASA 200 film and want 1/2 a stop more light, turn the ASA meter to
150ASA. A full stop more would be 100ASA. This works in reverse too. Remember
to return to the correct ASA speed during normal picture taking. |
ST |
Self Timer - This can allow you to be in the picture (with a tripod)
or for long shutter shots (1/15 or slower) and will take some of the shake from
your hand pressing down on the shutter. Manual self timers have an arm to push
down (once down, only pressing the self timer release button will release them
and fire a shot) and you will hear a buzzing as the gears wait to release the
shutter some 15 seconds later. Many cameras after the early '80s have
electronics ones. A front "red LED" will blink, just before the shutter fires
the LED will blink faster. Some of the electronic ones have 5 and 15 second
lengths. The CP-9AF and CP-7m can be set to varying lengths. These two models
have Interval timers that can set a time between frames automatically. These
two can wait up to 1 1/2 hours between shots and then fire with automatic
exposure or set off a long exposure. |
HS |
Hot Shoe - Most cameras have one on top of the pentaprism. This
allows a flash to mount on top of the camera and a center contact allows the
flash to fire. Many cameras have extra pins on the top to allow dedicated
flashes which provides more functions such as TTL flash. This type of flash
measures the flash "Through The Lens" allowing just the image going on the film
to be read by the camera's meter. This helps in many instances as extra light
reflected back to the flashes "electric eye" can be fooled by close objects or
not enough reflected light due to other subjects being too far away. |
DOF |
Depth of Field Preview - the ability to shut the aperture down and
view (in a darkened viewfinder) what is in focus. |
MLU |
Mirror Lock Up - A few expensive cameras have this function. This
will lock up the mirror so when using time exposures or slow shutter speeds with
long lenses the mirror won't shake the camera as it flops up, out of the way to
allow the film to be exposed. |
EL |
Exposure Lock - This great feature allows you to get an exposure of
an item and then move further away from the subject and not allowing the
brighter or darker surrounds to change the exposure. This is great with zoom
lenses. Zoom close and get the reading and lock it, then zoom back. Normally
you press a button to lock the exposure while still maintain pressure on the
shutter button until you fully press it. One the shutter is fired, the EL is
removed. |
