Dear Colleague:

The New Jersey Department of Health's goal is to provide a healthier, safer environment for all citizens. Reducing smoking and tobacco use, especially by our youth, will help us achieve this goal. Smoking and smoking-related diseases are a major cause of death among New Jersey adults. Among our youth, many factors interact to encourage smoking and tobacco use including smoking by adult role models, family members, and peers. Most young people who smoke regularly continue to smoke throughout their adult life, which attributes to smoking-related diseases.

This 1996 Resource Directory has been compiled in an effort to reduce the prevalence of smoking among adults and youth in New Jersey, and to address the concerns about smoking and tobacco use. Funded by the New Jersey ASSIST project, resources for smoking cessation courses in the State are listed by county. This Directory has been developed to help both individuals and agencies locate cessation programs in New Jersey.

This Directory lists the majority of smoking cessation programs. Information on private or proprietary treatment programs may be obtained from other sources such as telephone directories, newspapers and other mass media advertising. The Department of Health plans to update this Directory annually. It should be noted that this Directory is provided for its educational and informational value. The New Jersey Department of Health does not endorse any resource listed, illustrated or in any manner advertised in this publication.
